October 31 – Degrowth

Hi everyone, here is the plan for class on October 31st.

1 – Introduction and check-in

2 – Explanation of Blog/Essay Assignment

3 – Re-cap discussion about Doughnut Economics and New Discussion About DeGrowth

4 – Group Work – Finalize Proposals

Here is the message I previously sent.

Hello everyone, I hope you are having a great start to the week. I wanted to give you some updates early in the week to get you prepared for class.

1 – The due date for the proposal is November 4th in my mailbox. I will allow groups more time in class this week to work on their proposals.

2 – If you missed last class and are not in a group, I will assign you to a group in class this week.

3 – We will finish our discussion of Doughnut Economics. We started discussing the chapters but ran out of time before the break.

4 – If you weren’t present during the discussion about Dougnhut Economics, either read a chapter of the book to participate in the discussion or read one of the following articles (below) on degrowth economics. You can still read a chapter from The Future is Degrowth: A Guide to a World Beyond Capitalism, although the articles provide a shorter summary of degrowth and am interesting critique.

Nirmal, P., Rochelau, D. (2019) Decolonizing degrowth in the post-development convergence: Questions, experiences, and proposals from two Indigenous territories, Environment and Planning E: Nature and Space, 2:3, 465-492.

Fitzpatrick, N., Parrique, T., Cosme, I. (2022) Exploring Degrowth Policy Proposals: A    Systematic Mapping with Thematic Synthesis, Journal of Cleaner Production, 365.

5 – Feel free to bring snacks, bread and dips to share like we did last week. No obligation though.
