October 8 – Food, Festivals & Community. Potluck!

Hi everyone,

I hope you had a great weekend! I’m sending the lesson details in advance so you have some time to prepare. Our next class theme is “Cooking.” For this session, each of you is invited to bring something to share with your classmates. It doesn’t need to be elaborate or feed the entire class—just a small sample is perfect.

Here’s what to bring and keep in mind:

  1. Something to share: Prepare or assemble a small item to share. It doesn’t have to be “cooked”—you can make something simple with dry ingredients or without heat.
  2. Ingredients list: Bring a list of the ingredients you used.
  3. Discussion: Be ready to briefly explain how you prepared or assembled your item.
  4. Room update: The department couldn’t get us another room, so we will make do with the room we have. We will also take advantage of the hallway and tables outside the room. If we do get another room at the last minute, I will notify you all via email and put a note on the room door – but this is an unlikely senerio.
  5. Storage and heating: We won’t have access to a fridge or heating equipment. Please plan accordingly and, if needed, bring a way to keep things cool (like an ice pack or insulated lunchbox).
  6. Optional: If you’d like, try making something with the sourdough starter—but this is completely optional.
  7. If there are barriers preventing you from participating: Please let me know in advance, and we’ll think of a way for you to be included.

Here’s the plan for class:

1 – Introduction and check-in

2 – Food Festival Potluck!

3 – Reading Discussion – Please come prepared to discuss at least one chapter from the text and talk about your blog topic.
